Etymology: German, acronym < the initial letters of Geheime Staats-Polizei, Secret State-Police, set up by Hermann Göring in Prussia, 1933, and extended to the whole of Germany in January 1934.
The secret police of the Nazi regime in Germany. Also transferred.
