Etymology: In sense 1 < drill v.3 + down adv. In sense 2 < to drill down at drill v.3 Additions.
1. Military. A drill exercise in which a number of troops, cadets, etc., compete with each other to follow the drill commands for the longest, those who fail to do so being eliminated from the drill formation until one person is left.
