Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin rheubarbarum, rhabarbarum.
Etymology: Originally (in α. forms) < post-classical Latin rheubarbarum (see rhubarb n.); subsequently (in β. forms) < post-classical Latin rhabarbarum, literally ‘foreign rhubarb’ (15th cent.) < rha rha n. + classical Latin barbarum , neuter of barbarus barbar adj., after rheubarbarum . Compare earlier rhubarb n., and also rhabarb n., rhapontic n.
Now historical and rare.
The dried rootstock of any of various species of rhubarb, imported to Europe from Asia (esp. China) and used medicinally as a purgative; a preparation of this; (also) a plant providing such a root (rare). Cf. rhabarb n., rhubarb n. 1a, 2a.
