Etymology: < French retirade (1594 in Middle French in the passage translated in quot. 1674; 15th cent. in sense ‘retreat’) < retirer retire v. + -ade -ade suffix. Compare Spanish retirada, Portuguese retirada, Italian ritirata, all 16th cent. in sense ‘withdrawal, retreat’.

Fortification. Now rare.

A retrenchment built withdrawn in a bastion, often within a re-entrant angle. Also in extended use.
