Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French rétinole.
Etymology: < French rétinole (P. J. Pelletier & J. Walter 1837, in L'Institut: Sci. math., physiques et nat. 5 190/2) < ancient Greek ῥητίνη resin (see retinite n.) + French -ole (see -ol suffix); in β. forms remodelled after -ol suffix.
Chemistry. Now rare.
A yellowish oil obtained by distilling resin and consisting largely of hydrocarbons.

Etymology: < retin- (in retina n.1) + -ol suffix. Compare earlier retinene n.
Biochemistry.
A yellow carotenoid alcohol that is the most potent form of vitamin A in most vertebrates. Also (more fully retinol2): a closely related compound found in freshwater and migratory (not marine) fish.Formulae: (retinol) C20H29OH; (retinol2) C20H27OH.
