Forms: late Middle English reuelator, 1600s– revelator.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin revelator.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin revelator person who reveals (early 3rd cent. in Tertullian) < classical Latin revēlāt- , past participial stem of revēlāre reveal v. + -or -or suffix. Compare Middle French revelateur , French révélateur (1444), Old Occitan revelador (1377), Spanish revelador (early 15th cent.; rare before 17th cent.), Portuguese revelador (1589), Italian rivelatore (second half of the 14th cent.; c1300 as †revelatore ), and also Old French revelere , Middle French reveleur (in an isolated undated attestation in Old French and c1355 in a translation of Livy, respectively). Compare later revealer n. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (revĕlēi·təɹ) /rɛvəˈleɪtə(r)/.
