Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin rētiārius.
Etymology: < classical Latin rētiārius (noun) gladiator (see retiarius n.), in post-classical Latin also net maker (from 12th cent. in British glossarial sources), (adjective) that makes a net or web (8th cent., 1520 in British sources; 1634 in araneus retiarius retiary spider). Compare French rétiaire gladiator with a net (beginning of the 17th cent.). In sense A. 2 after scientific Latin Retiariae (1783 or earlier). Compare earlier retiarius n.
