Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on Latin lexical items. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; perhaps modelled on Latin lexical items. Etymons: re- prefix, talion n.1; re- prefix, Latin tāliōn-, tāliō.
Etymology: < re- prefix + talion n.1 or its etymon classical Latin tāliōn-, tāliō talio n., after retaliate v.1 and retaliation n. or their Latin etymons. Compare also earlier lex talionis n.
Obsolete. rare.
Retaliation. Only in law (also penalty) of retalion: the retributive theory of punishment, based on Mosaic law, in which a punishment resembles the offence committed in kind and degree. Cf. lex talionis n.Apparently only in the works of Andrew Willet.
