Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek πήδησις.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek πήδησις leaping, already in ancient Greek in sense ‘beating, throbbing’ of the heart < ancient Greek πηδᾶν to leap, beat, throb (ultimately < the same Indo-European base as foot n. and int.) + ancient Greek -σις -sis suffix.
Science. Now rare.

1878 W. S. Jevons in Q. Jrnl. Sci. Apr. 170/1 Some writers have called it the Brownian movement... I have ventured to coin..a new word, and call the motion pedesis, from Gr. πήδησις leaping or bounding.
