Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: jinrikisha n.
Etymology: Shortened < jinrikisha n.Compare the similarly shortened Japanese rikisha (1909 or earlier), although this was probably formed after English; compare: 1910 M. C. Stopes Jrnl. from Japan 28 (note) It is only in Yokohama and such Europeanized places that the word rickshaw is understood. N.E.D. (1909) also gives the pronunciation (ri·kʃă) /ˈrɪkʃə/.
