单词 revers
释义

reversn.

Brit. /rᵻˈvɪə/, U.S. /rəˈvɪ(ə)r/, /riˈvɪ(ə)r/, /rəˈvɛ(ə)r/, /riˈvɛ(ə)r/
Inflections: Plural unchanged;
Forms:

α. Middle English reuere (transmission error), Middle English reuers, Middle English 1800s– revers.

β. 1800s– rever, 1900s– revere.

Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French revers.
Etymology: Originally < Anglo-Norman revers, rewers (13th cent.; apparently unparalleled in continental French until much later: 1797), specific use of revers reverse n. In later use reborrowed < French revers (see above). The β. forms probably reflect the pronunciation of the French etymon, rather than showing an inferred singular. Compare reverse n. 10. N.E.D. (1908) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (rəvę̄r) /rəvɛr/. It is unclear whether the following early quot. is to be taken as showing the Middle English or the Anglo-Norman word:1377 Inquisition Misc. (P.R.O.: C 145/213/6) m. 2 j tunica murr. cum j reuers de Calabre precii x s.
The edge of a garment turned back to reveal the undersurface (often at the lapel or cuff) (chiefly in plural); the material covering such an edge.
