单词 rest day
释义

rest dayn.

Brit. /ˈrɛs(t) deɪ/, U.S. /ˈrɛs(t) ˌdeɪ/
Forms: see rest n.1 and day n.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: rest n.1, day n.
Etymology: < rest n.1 + day n. Compare Old High German restitac (in which the first element probably shows a different (īn -stem) formation from the same Germanic base). Compare resting day n. at resting n.1 Compounds 1a and day of rest n. at rest n.1 Phrases 4.Old English (and early Middle English) forms with final -e at the end of the first element (e.g. restedæg , ræstedæg ) are common. This final -e probably represents either the (strong feminine) genitive ending or (perhaps more likely) a connecting vowel -e- (compare D. Kastovsky in R. M. Hogg Cambr. Hist. Eng. Lang. (1992) I. 363), but could also be explained as reflecting failure of syncopation of the stem-forming suffix (i.e. an earlier *resti- ); compare A. Campbell Old Eng. Gram. (1959) §348 note 2, R. M. Hogg Gram. Old Eng. (1992) I. §6.21. In Old English the prefixed form gerestedæg (compare y- prefix) is also attested. Compare also the synonymous Old English restendæg , ræstendæg (which survives into early Middle English in late copies of material of Old English composition), probably showing a first element resten- ( < rest v.1 + -en suffix2; compare also (rare) restengēar year of rest) rather than a reduced form of restan , genitive of reste , rare weak by-form of rest rest n.1; however, it is possible that the first element was reanalysed by some speakers as the weak genitive of the noun (compare Sunnandæg Sunday n.). For examples of this word compare:OE Homily: Sermonem Angelorum Nomina (Corpus Cambr. 419) in A. S. Napier Wulfstan (1883) 230 Forðan þe se sunnandæg is restendæg and wuldorlic dæg.OE Homily: Sunnandæges Spell (Tiber. A.iii) in A. S. Napier Wulfstan (1883) 223 Se þe ne gehealdaþ þane halgan sunnandeg, minne restandæg.c1175 ( Ælfric Homily (Bodl. 343) in S. Irvine Old Eng. Homilies (1993) 62 Þe mon wæs ihæled on þam halȝan ræstendæȝe.
