Etymology: < German groschen (masculine), altered form (not diminutive) of Middle High German gros , grosse = French gros : see gross n.2
Before the establishment of the present German monetary system, a small silver coin and money of account variously = 1/ 24, 1/ 30, or 1/ 36 of a thaler.
