Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin respers-, respergere.
Etymology: < classical Latin respers-, past participial stem of respergere to sprinkle, splash, spatter, to spatter with disgrace or obloquy, in post-classical Latin also to spread out (5th cent.) < re- re- prefix + spargere sparse v. Compare Middle French resperger to sprinkle (1374), respargir to spread (a1481). Compare disperse v., asperse v.
Obsolete. rare.
1. transitive. To sprinkle, spatter; to stain, spot.In quot. 1609: to sprinkle in as an ingredient, to intermingle (cf. asperse v. 3).
