Etymology: < the name of either Pitcairn Island or the Pitcairn Islands, a group of islands in the central South Pacific + -er suffix1.Pitcairn Island, the chief island of the group, was named by Captain Philip Carteret, British navigator (1738–96) after midshipman Robert Pitcairn (1752–1770) on account of his having first sighted the island on 2 July, 1767.
A native or inhabitant of the Pitcairn Islands in the central South Pacific; spec. a native or inhabitant of Pitcairn Island, the chief island of the group, settled with a mixed European and Polynesian population by mutineers from H.M.S. Bounty in 1790.
