Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; originally modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: re- prefix, purge v.1
Etymology: < re- prefix + purge v.1, originally after classical Latin repurgāre to make clean, cleanse, to clarify (the sight), to obtain by cleansing or refinement, to free from obstructions, to purge away (persons from a list), in post-classical Latin also to refute (late 2nd cent. in Tertullian), to expurgate, correct (text, books) (15th cent.; 16th cent. in British sources). Compare Middle French, French repurger to cleanse again (1572), to abolish (abuses) (1602), to give a new purgation to (c1670), Catalan repurgar (15th cent.), Spanish repurgar (15th cent.), Italian ripurgare (1599).
