Etymology: As noun probably < post-classical Latin repulsorium means of driving back, defence (4th cent.), use as noun of neuter of repulsorius (see below); as adjective < post-classical Latin repulsorius serving to drive or force back (4th cent.) < classical Latin repuls- , past participial stem of repellere repel v. + -ōrius -ory suffix2. Compare Middle French, French repoussoir , noun, usually denoting a tool for pulling out nails (16th cent.: compare quot. 1611).
