Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin reptans; Latin reptant-, reptāns.
Etymology: < scientific Latin reptans creeping (1753 in botany as a specific epithet, 1758 in zoology as a specific name) and its etymon classical Latin reptant-, reptāns, present participle of reptāre to creep, frequentative formation < rēpere to creep (see repent adj.2). Compare repent adj.2, reptile adj., reptitious adj.
1. Zoology (and Botany). Of a sessile animal, or (formerly) †a plant or part of a plant (obsolete): prostrate; growing along the ground or substrate. Cf. repent adj.2 1a.
