Origin: Probably formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: re- prefix, productor n.
Etymology: Probably < re- prefix + productor n., after reproduce v., reproduction n., etc. In quot. 1852 perhaps after French reproducteur (1870 in this sense in dictionaries, although quot. 1852 is from a translation of a letter originally written in French; 1846 in general sense ‘reproducer’). Compare earlier reproductory adj.
A domestic animal or bird used for breeding.
