Compare earlier Reichschancellor n.With reference to the Holy Roman Empire, German Reichskanzler is apparently originally a shortening of Reichserzkanzler, the title of each of the three ecclesiastic Electors ( < Reichs- + Erzkanzler arch-chancellor; compare Middle High German erchikenteller des rikes, early modern German des heiligin richis irtzkantzelir, both with reference to the archbishop of Cologne).
