Etymology: < Middle French, French rescription action of rewriting or of adding to what one has written (13th cent. in Old French), action of replying in writing, written reply (1307), written order for a sum of money (1555), promissory note issued by a government (1795) and its etymon classical Latin rescriptiōn-, rescriptiō written reply from the emperor giving his decision, in post-classical Latin also papal rescript (c1200 in a British source) < rescript- , past participial stem of rescrībere rescribe v. + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare rescript n.
1. The action of replying in writing; a written reply. Obsolete.In quot. 1763: a receipt (cf. sense 3). In quot. 1896: a written reply from the emperor.
