Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French régule.
Etymology: < French régule impure form of metal obtained by roasting or melting ore (1742 (in régule de Vénus , literally ‘regulus of Venus’, denoting such a form of copper) or earlier), transferred use of régule regulus n. Compare earlier regulus n. 3.
Metallurgy. Now rare.
An impure form of metal, esp. copper, obtained by roasting or melting ore. Cf. regulus n. 3b.
