Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: re- prefix, masticate v.
Etymology: < re- prefix + masticate v. Compare French remastiquer (dated 1722 in Robert Dict. alphabétique et analogique (1986)) and (more common) remâcher (1538 in Middle French as remascher; 1558 used figuratively).
Chiefly Zoology.
transitive. To masticate (food or cud) again. Cf. ruminate v. 3a.In quot. 1806 figurative.
