单词 regula
释义

regulan.

Brit. /ˈrɛɡjᵿlə/, U.S. /ˈrɛɡjələ/
Forms: Old English regla (rare), Old English (rare) 1500s– regula, early Middle English regulam (rare).
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin rēgula.
Etymology: < classical Latin rēgula rod for drawing straight lines or measuring, ruler, basic principle, rule, rod, bar, (in the Doric order) smooth stone band under the taenia below each triglyph, in post-classical Latin also rule of faith, creed, symbol (early 3rd cent. in Tertullian), canon, regulation or code of ecclesiastical discipline (5th cent.), written monastic rule (from 8th cent. (in a British source)) < regere to make or lead straight (see regent adj.) + -ula -ula suffix. Compare reghel n. and the Germanic words cited at that entry, regle n., and rule n.1In Old English and early Middle English only in a very few isolated attestations (the usual word is the fully naturalized reghel n. (compare quot. OE at sense 1)). The word was apparently reborrowed in the 16th cent., and there is no continuity of use with the Old English and early Middle English. The Middle English form regulam is after the Latin accusative singular.
