Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; partly modelled on a Spanish lexical item, and partly modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: represent v.1, -ant suffix1.
Etymology: < represent v.1 + -ant suffix1, partly (in sense 1) after Spanish representante actor (1550 or earlier; compare French représentant actor, comedian (1616)), and partly (in subsequent senses) after French représentant person who stands in for another at a public function or ceremony, person authorized to act or speak on behalf of another (1686), person chosen to represent a religious group (1690), person elected to represent a political group (17th cent.; 1599 in legal use in sense ‘person inheriting an estate as exercising the rights of a predecessor’), use as noun of present participle of représenter (see represent v.1). Compare Dutch representant (1657), German Repräsentant (mid 18th cent.), Swedish representant (early 18th cent.), all < French. Compare earlier representer n., representor n., representator n.
