Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Old Saxon bismītan to pollute, Old High German bismīzan to smear, to pollute, Gothic bismeitan to smear, to anoint < the Germanic base of be- prefix + the Germanic base of smite v.In Old English a strong verb of Class I, considerably more frequent than unprefixed smite v. (see discussion at that entry).
1. transitive. To pollute, to stain, to taint; to corrupt. Cf. smite v. 2. Obsolete (archaic and poetic in later use).
