Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish regidor.
Etymology: < Spanish regidor governor (c1237) < regir to rule, to reign (14th cent.; < classical Latin regere to rule, govern (see regent adj.) + -dor , suffix forming agent nouns (see -or suffix). Compare Old Occitan regidor governor (13th cent.), Catalan regidor ruler, controller (late 13th cent.). Compare also Portuguese regedor (1572 in the passage translated in quot. 1655).
Chiefly in Spain and Spanish-speaking countries: a member of a cabildo or municipal council; a councillor; a village official.
