单词 regatta
释义

regattan.

Brit. /rᵻˈɡatə/, U.S. /rəˈɡædə/, /rəˈɡɑdə/
Forms:

α. 1600s regater.

β. 1600s regatto, 1600s–1700s regata, 1700s– regatta.

γ. 1600s–1700s regate.

Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Perhaps also partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Italian regata, regatta; French régate.
Etymology: < Italian regional (originally Genoa and Naples, later Venice) regata, †regatta (also †ragata , †ragatta , †ricatta , †rigatta ) nautical event, especially a boat race (13th cent.) < regatare (also †ragattare , †regattare ) to contend, to compete (13th cent.), to race against another boat (1420), to race in a regatta (late 16th cent.), perhaps < an unattested post-classical Latin form *recaptare < classical Latin re- re- prefix + captare to take, seize (see captate v.).In γ. forms probably partly via French régate (1608 in the passage translated in quot. 1612 at sense 1). The isolated instance of regater in quot. 1612 at sense 1 probably also shows a remodelling or misapprehension of the French word.
