Etymology: Origin unknown.A suggested connection with French ganse braid (1611) would not account for the word's form, nor is the French word recorded in connection with fishing or angling.

transitive. To protect (a fish hook or part of a fishing line) by winding (esp. fine) wire around it; to fasten (a fish hook) to a line in this way.
