Origin: From a proper name; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymon: proper name Reissner.
Etymology: < the name of Ernst Reissner (1824–78), German anatomist from Latvia, who described the membrane in 1851. Compare German Reissner'sche Membran (1860 or earlier).
Anatomy.
Reissner's membrane n. (also membrane of Reissner) the vestibular membrane, which separates the cochlear duct and the vestibular canal in the labyrinth of the inner ear.
