Etymology: < Middle French refrigeratif cooling (first half of the 14th cent.; French †réfrigératif ) and its etymon post-classical Latin refrigerativus cooling (5th cent.; a1250 in a British source) < classical Latin refrīgerāt- , past participial stem of refrīgerāre refrigerate v. + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare Spanish refrigerativo (end of the 15th cent.), Portuguese refrigerativo (1615), Italian refrigerativo (c1350).
