Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French millième.
Etymology: < French millième a thousandth (see millesm n.); not recorded in the specific senses below in French dictionaries, although for sense 1 compare quot. 1854 at sense 1, and with sense 2 compare millime n.
1. In form millième. A unit of weight equal to one-thousandth of a gram, esp. as a measure of the fineness of gold and silver. Obsolete.

1854 De Bow's Rev. July 2 The standard of fineness for gold being fixed at .917; that for silver at .882 millièmes, according to the French mode of computation, now employed in the Mints of the United States, instead of the ancient expression by carats and eighths.
1865 Sci. Amer. 20 May 320/2 All the gun-cottons we analyzed were previously washed in a mixture of alcohol and ether, to remove some millièmes of fatty and soluble matters.

2. A monetary unit of Egypt (also at one time current in Sudan), introduced in 1885, and equal to one-hundredth (formerly one-tenth) of a piastre, or one-thousandth of a pound. Also: a monetary unit of Libya, equivalent to one-thousandth of a pound (disused).
