Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin refragāt-, refragārī.
Etymology: < classical Latin refragāt-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of refragārī to act in opposition, to oppose the interests (of), to act counter (to) < re- re- prefix + -fragārī (in suffragārī suffragate v.).
Obsolete.
intransitive. To oppose in argument; to controvert, gainsay.
