Etymology: < reed n.1 + grass n.1 In sense 1 after Dutch rietgras (1554 in this sense, in the passage translated in quot. 1578; now obsolete in this sense; also denoting the common reed and various grasses thought to resemble it (1573 as †riedtgras)). Compare also West Frisian reidgers reed canary grass, Old Saxon hriadgras, hriodgras, German Riedgras (Middle High German rietgras, Old High German hriodgras, riotgras), denoting the common reed and various grasses thought to resemble it.

(a) a cornfield grass, perhaps silky bent, Apera spica-venti (obsolete rare); (b) (more fully canary reed-grass) reed canary grass, Phalaris arundinacea; (c) a reed of the genus Calamagrostis, also called smallreed; (now chiefly U.S.); (d) reed sweetgrass, Glyceria maxima.
