Etymology: < red adj. + a second element probably cognate with Middle Low German lösche , Old High German loski , losc (Middle High German lösche , lösch , early modern German lösch , losch , lasch ), all in sense ‘kind of red leather’; further etymology unknown. Either a cognate or a parallel is thus probably shown by Middle Low German rōtlösch , rōtlosch , rōtlos , rōtlesch , rōtlasch , Old High German rōtloski ; compare also Old High German loskeshūt , loschūt (compare hide n.¹), loskesfel (compare fell n.¹), loskīn (adjective). It is possible that some of the Middle English examples could show adaptations of the Middle Low German or Middle High German words.Compare also Old English rēodnæsc , attested once in Corpus Gloss. glossing Latin partica red leather, and perhaps an error for *rēodlæsc , thus representing a parallel formation from reod adj.
