Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French redituaire; Latin redituarius.
Etymology: < Middle French, French †redituaire (1566 in the passage translated in quot. 1607) and its etymon post-classical Latin redituarius person to whom rents are due (in an undated source in Du Cange) < classical Latin reditus revenue ( < redit- , past participial stem of redīre (see redient adj.) + -us , suffix forming verbal nouns) + -ārius -ary suffix1.
Church History. Obsolete.
A member of an order of friars entitled to hold land and possessions. Contrasted with mendicant.

1656 T. Blount Glossographia (following Cotgrave) Redituaries, an order of Franciscan Friers, which have Lands and Revenues; therein differing from the Mendicants or begging Friers, who are to possess nothing.
