1. British. Nautical. Originally: the ensign of the red squadron of the Royal Navy. Later: the ensign flown by British merchant ships and British-registered private vessels. Cf. Blue Ensign n. 1, ensign n. 5.The Red Ensign consists of a red flag with a Union Jack in the top corner near the hoist.
