ree-rawn.adj.

Brit. /ˈriːrɔː/, U.S. /ˈriˌrɔ/, /ˈriˌrɑ/, Scottish English /ˈrirɔ/, Irish English /ˈriːrɒː/
Forms:

α. Scottish 1700s– reel-rall, 1800s reel-raal, 1800s reel-rawl, 1800s– reel-ral; Irish English (northern) 1900s– reel-raal, 1900s– reel-rall, 1900s– reel-rawl.

β. Irish English 1800s re-raw, 1800s– ree-ra, 1800s– ree-raw, 1900s– ree-raa, 1900s– rí-rá; Newfoundland 1800s ree-rah, 1800s– ree-raw.

γ. Scottish 1900s– reel-raw.

δ. U.S. regional 1900s– ree-rye.

Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by compounding. Perhaps a borrowing from Irish. Etymons: reel n.2; Irish rí-rá.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. If the α. forms are primary, perhaps a reduplication with vowel variation of reel n.2 If the β. forms are primary, perhaps < Irish rí-rá commotion, revelry, clamour (mid 18th cent.), of uncertain origin, perhaps an expressive formation. If Irish rí-rá is not the etymon of the English word, it was probably itself borrowed from English; in that case the fact that it is attested earlier would imply earlier currency also of the β. forms of the English word. In form rí-rá at β. forms (the usual current Irish English spelling outside northern Ireland) after the Irish form. For slightly earlier currency of Ree raw in Ireland apparently as the customary sobriquet of a person trying to clear himself of a wrongful accusation see Walker's Hibernian Mag. (1787) Sept. 501. Sc. National Dict. at reel-rall also records a form reel-ma-rall (20th cent., Aberdeenshire), perhaps showing an alteration after rigmarole n.
regional (chiefly Scottish and Irish English).
