Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Brandhirsch.
Etymology: < German Brandhirsch (late 16th cent. or earlier) < Brand burning, conflagration (see brand n.) + Hirsch stag (see hart n.), with substitution of deer n. for the second element of the German compound.
A loose adaptation of German brand-hirsch, ‘a stag with dark-brown breast.’ Grimm.
