Etymology: Origin unknown. Compare later rivet n.2, which may be connected, although the forms are difficult to reconcile. In later use perhaps associated with refet adj. (compare quots. 1496 and 1602 at refet adj. 1). Perhaps compare also Middle French refait rouget, kind of fish (second half of the 16th cent. in an apparently isolated attestation).On quot. a1500 see also discussion at refete n.
Obsolete.
Apparently: the intestines of a fish; fish offal.

Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French refet.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman refet, either a variant of Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French refait strong, fat (c1180: see below) or directly < classical Latin refectus refect adj. Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French refait shows use as adjective of the past participle of refaire (French refaire ) to refresh, restore (early 12th cent. in Anglo-Norman), in Anglo-Norman also ‘to feed’ (c1275 or earlier) < re- re- prefix + faire to make (see fact n.). Compare refete v.
Chiefly used as past participle. Obsolete.
