Etymology: Apparently < recover v.1 + -ance suffix, partly after Middle French recouvrance (French recouvrance ) help, salvation, remedy (c1100 in Old French), recovery of possession, possibility of recovering something, action of recovering (all 15th cent.). Compare also Anglo-Norman recoveraunce action of recovering something lost (13th cent. in an apparently isolated attestation). Compare recoverer n.1, recover n., recovering n.1, recovery n.
