Etymology: < post-classical Latin auctric-, auctrix (see authrix n.); compare -trice suffix. Compare Middle French auctrice woman who is the cause or instigator of something (1521; French autrice now only in sense ‘female writer’, 1726 in this sense), Italian autrice (a1406 in an isolated attestation, subsequently from 1598). Compare later authrix n.In β. forms with alteration after author n.
Obsolete.
