单词 reel foot
释义

reel footn.

Brit. /ˈriːl ˈfʊt/, U.S. /ˈril ˌfʊt/, Scottish English /ˈril ˌfut/, Irish English /ˈriːl ˌfʊt/
Origin: Probably formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: reel n.1, reel v.1, foot n.
Etymology: Probably < either reel n.1 or reel v.1 + foot n., with reference to the gait of a person who has a club foot. Compare earlier reel-footed adj.It is unclear whether there is any etymological connection between the first element of the compound and Norwegian regional rela to wrench, to dislocate a joint (of uncertain origin, perhaps a variant of ridla in same sense (apparently < vrida writhe v. + -la -le suffix)). The word has been compared with Irish cam reilige bandiness, lit. ‘graveyard-crookedness’ (apparently so called because this was once believed to be caused by one's mother walking over a grave when pregnant), but this poses phonological problems, and there is apparently no Scottish Gaelic equivalent to this phrase. Recorded earliest in U.S. place names, perhaps originally with reference to a club-footed chief of the Chickasaw tribe (see quot. 1924). Compare the following:1793 W. Faden United States N. Amer. (map) Reelfoot R.1795 J. Reid Kentucky (map) Kaskinompa or Reel Foot River.
Chiefly regional (Scottish, Irish English (northern), and U.S.). Now rare.
A twisted or deformed foot, spec. a club foot; (also) the condition of having such a foot or feet. Cf. reel-footed adj.
