Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French reconnaître.
Etymology: < French reconnaître (in military contexts) to make an examination of the nature of the terrain of the dispositions of the enemy (1557 in Middle French), to examine (a place, terrain, etc.) (1611), specific senses of reconnaître to recognize, etc. (see recognize v.1). Compare earlier reconnoitre v., and also later reconnaissance n.
