Etymology: < post-classical Latin re (11th cent.; from 13th cent. in British sources) < re- (in classical Latin resonāre resonate v.: see note at gamut n.). Compare Middle French re (c1223 in Old French; French ), Spanish re (a1460), Italian re (13th or 14th cent.).In the tonic sol-fa usually in form ray . Compare earlier gesolreutz en haut (see G-sol-re-ut n.):c1380 in Speculum (1946) 21 197 Qwan ilke note til other lepes and makes hem a-sawt, That we calles a moyson in gesolreutz en hawt.
Music.
In the system attributed to Guido d'Arezzo: the second note of a hexachord; (also, in later solmization, and in the movable-doh and tonic sol-fa systems) the second note of the major scale, or the fourth note of the minor scale. Also, in the fixed-doh system: the note D (rare).

Etymology: Symbolic abbreviation for rhenium n.In use in German from 1925 (W. Noddack et al. 1925, in Sitzungsberichte der Preußischen Akademie der Wissenschaften 409).
