Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French reduté.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman reduté, Anglo-Norman and Middle French redoubté, redouté (French redouté ) (late 12th cent. in Old French as redoté , frequently with reference to a sovereign or ruler; use as adjective as past participle of redoter , redoubter , redouter redoubt v.), with suffix substitution (compare -ed suffix1). Compare slightly later redoubt v., and also redoubt adj., redoubtable adj.
Esp. of a person: revered, respected; noted, distinguished; (also) formidable, feared. Cf. redoubtable adj.In early use frequently used of a sovereign or ruler.
