Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin recoct-, recoquere.
Etymology: < classical Latin recoct-, past participial stem of recoquere to boil up, rehash < re- re- prefix + coquere to cook (see cook n.1).Frequently (compare e.g. quots.1605 at main sense, 1735 at main sense and also quot. 1699 for recocted adj. at Derivatives) collocating with crambe n.; compare post-classical Latin crambe recocta (a1536 in Erasmus). N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (rĭkǫ·kt) /rɪˈkɒkt/.
Obsolete.
transitive. To boil, bake, or cook a second or further time. Also figurative: to revamp, overhaul; (chiefly depreciative) to rehash.
