razern.1

Brit. /ˈreɪzə/, U.S. /ˈreɪzər/
Forms:

α. late Middle English–1500s raser, 1700s rasier.

β. 1500s razieres (plural), 1600s 1800s– razer, 1700s razier.

Origin: Probably a borrowing from French. Etymons: French rasiere; French rasier; French raser.
Etymology: Probably partly < Middle French (Flanders, Picardy, Normandy) rasiere, raziere (French regional (Flanders, Normandy) rasière ) level measure of capacity for grain and other dry goods, equivalent to approximately half a hectolitre (1230 in Old French; 1212 denoting a measure of surface; apparently < ras completely full (see rase n.) + -iere (compare -ier suffix)), partly < Middle French (Flanders, Picardy) rasier (French †rasier ) measure of capacity for grain (16th cent.; 1326 as raisier ; apparently < ras completely full (see rase n.) + -ier -ier suffix), and partly < Anglo-Norman raser level measure for grain (a1380 or earlier; perhaps a variant of Middle French raisier (see above), or perhaps use as noun of raser raze v.). Compare post-classical Latin rasarium , rasera , raseria , raserium , rasorium (11th cent.; from 12th cent. in British sources). Compare earlier rasure n.2 Compare also rase n.In quot. 1742 apparently after (or perhaps independently < ) Dutch regional (Flanders; now hist.) rasiere, raziere (Middle Dutch rasiere, raziere; < Old French).
Now historical and rare.
