Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin rāstrum.
Etymology: < classical Latin rāstrum rake < rādere to scrape (see raze v.) + -trum , instrumental suffix. Compare German Rastral (18th cent.). Compare also earlier rostrum n. 3d.
Music.
A multi-nibbed pen designed for drawing all the lines of a musical stave simultaneously; = music-pen n. at music n. and adj. Compounds 2.
