Etymology: Aphetic < acquaintance n. Compare Anglo-Norman queyntaunce , queintance , Middle French cointance meeting, encounter (second half of the 13th cent. or earlier). Compare quaint v.1Earlier currency is perhaps implied by the surname Johannes Quentance (1194).
Now rare.
